Issue the Portuguese electronic passport abroad

Information on how and where to request the passport abroad.

The passport is an individual travelling document which allows the entry and exit from Portugal and other countries that recognize it.

Consular stations and sections may issue passports to Portuguese citizens resident abroad or who are there occasionally, in exceptional situations.

The replacement of the passport may be carried out on the following cases:

• Expiry of the passport
• Outdating of the identification elements of the holder of the valid passport
• Passport fully filled on the pages intended for visas
• Poor conservation status or destruction
• Destruction, theft or loss
• Expiry of the passport on the following six months or, on exceptional and justified cases, within a year
• Replacement of the previous passport model.

Valid Citizen Card or Identity Document (which cannot be replaced by any other identity document).
