To be driven on the road, vehicles (light and heavy vehicles, motorcycles and trailers) must undergo mandatory periodic inspections and, where necessary, other inspections. These inspections confirm that the vehicle meets the safety, environmental and operational requirements set by law. Only vehicles registered in Portugal (with Portuguese registration plates) are required to undergo inspections.
The date of the vehicle inspection depends on the date of first registration. The inspection must be carried out at one of the Vehicle Inspection Centres (Centros de Inspeção Técnica de Veículos – CITV) chosen by the driver.

You can check the vehicle category on the IMT portal or on the vehicle registration certificate (Certificado de Matrícula - DUA). The date of first registration is also shown on the vehicle registration certificate.
In the years when the vehicle must be inspected, the inspection must be carried out by the same day and month as the vehicle’s first registration. The inspection may be carried out within the three months before that date. Example: if the first registration date is 08/05/2008, the inspection may be carried out between 8 February and 8 May.
