Apply for higher education

Applications for admission to higher education courses can be submitted via the Directorate-General for Higher Education’s Online Application platform.

The first phase takes place every year between July and August.

You may apply if you meet all of the following conditions:

  • you have completed 12 years in the Portuguese education system or an equivalent system abroad;

  • you have taken, in the year in which you are applying, or in the previous four years, the national examinations corresponding to the admission tests required for the respective course;

  • you have achieved the required marks for the course being applied for;

  • you have completed the prerequisites for the course being applied for, if required;

  • you do not have international student status.

The national admissions process has three application phases per year. You may apply for higher education in one or more application phases; however:

  • If you are placed in Phase 1 of higher education and then apply in Phase 2 and are placed in it, your Phase 1 placement will automatically be cancelled, even if you have already enrolled and registered.

  • If you are placed in Phase 1 or Phase 2 and then apply in Phase 3 and are placed, your previous placement will automatically be cancelled, even if you have already enrolled and registered.
